Keeping Safe During COVID-19

To Our Valued Clients,

The doctors and team at Wyomissing Animal Hospital will continue to provide care to our patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are implementing new policies to protect the health of our staff and our clients. As recommended by the CDC, we will limit the number of people entering the hospital to maintain social distancing practices.

Appointment Procedures:

  • When you arrive for your appointment, please check in with the team member located at the station set up outside the front door entrance. After checking in, a team member will escort your pet into the office. After examining your pet, the doctor will give you a call to discuss the treatment plan. After medical treatment is provided, your pet will be returned to you by a team member. For your convenience, we can collect payment at your vehicle.
  • If you are coughing or unwell, please have someone else bring your pet to the hospital or call us to discuss another plan if that isn’t an option for you.
  • A reminder to bring your cat in a cat carrier and your dog on a leash to allow us to escort your pet inside safely
  • Exceptions may be made to allow you to enter the hospital in some circumstances.
  • Please call us to discuss our appointment availability; staff will remain onsite to offer assistance or direction during our regular hospital hours.

Surgery & Dentals:

We will continue to provide our surgical and dental services as scheduled.

Hospitalized Patients:

Please talk with us about visitation if your pet is hospitalized. We will determine a plan on a case by case basis.

Medication & Food Refills:

Please continue to offer 48 hours’ notice for medication or prescription food refills. When arriving to pick up your pet’s medication or food, check in with the team member at the station outside the front door entrance.

Other Preventative Safety Measures We are Taking:

We are frequently wiping down all high touch surfaces and common areas with disinfectants. Team members are washing their hands for at least 20 seconds between each patient and wearing gloves to handle all patients. Although we’d like to, our team won’t be shaking hands with anyone.

For after hour emergencies, we recommend:

Berks Animal Emergency & Referral Service, Hope Veterinary Specialists, Metropolitan Veterinary Associates, Veterinary Referral Center, or Valley Central.

Can the COVID-19 virus spread from pets to humans?

The doctors and staff of Wyomissing Animal Hospital have been closely following all information on COVID-19 and its effect on people and their pets. The Animal Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) continue to provide updates on this matter.

Based on the information provided by the AVMA and PVMA, at this time there is no evidence for risk of transmission of COVID-19 from animals to humans.

There have been a few cases of COVID-19 being transmitted from positive owners to their pets. Specifically, these were two cats in New York State that developed mild respiratory symptoms acquired from positive COVID-19 owners in direct contact with their pets. These cases were self-limiting.

There were several large exotic cats in the Bronx Zoo that developed mild respiratory symptoms from exposure to a COVID-19 positive human employee at the Zoo.

The important fact is that there is no current evidence of animal to human transmission. Please refer to the PVMA and CDC links below for more information:

Client Update, 5/11/20:

Our curbside service has been going great, and we thank you for your patience during our current unique processes! We continue to triage patient care requests based on each circumstance and recommended state guidelines. Happily, we are scheduling upcoming wellness services. You can contact us via our website or by phone to schedule services.

Beginning on May 17, 2020, we temporarily will not be seeing appointments on Sundays until further notice. We will keep you posted on when we can reinstitute our Sunday emergency appointment hours from 9am – 11am. We remain open and available to assist you and your furry family members Monday through Saturday. Please call us if there is anything we can do to assist you or your pet(s)!

Client Update, 5/14/20:

Thank you so much for your support and patience during this time. We are working very diligently to continue to provide the best care to our beloved pets through our curbside service.

We are currently operating with fewer resources than normal and we ask you to please continue to be patient during our unprecedented journey together. Please expect a longer wait time for your appointment is possible, so plan ahead to allow extra time during your visit with us.

We care about each and every one of our patients and clients, and we are working hard to keep everyone healthy and happy.
